Michael Peel on how the two main parties must confront long-term problems and ditch fantasies of restoring past greatness if the UK is to adapt to the world as it is now.
This situation will remain as long as we have dishonest politicians like Johnson and Farage plus a gaggle of others, backed by an even more dishonest media, with an ill informed and gullible populace.
Starmer’s silence on the catastrophe of Brexit is effectively a whopping great lie: because it effectively suggests that Brexit is not our biggest problem. It is, however, our biggest problem, because, if we do not radically engage with the single market and adopt its rules and regulations, we will never generate the economic recovery needed to fund the rebuilding of our increasingly derelict nation.
One can only hope that Starmer’s core centre left democratic, liberal and internationalist vote will quickly kick him in the backside so hard that he has to engage with reality.
On a separate point: is there - just wondering - conceivably significant enough funding available from cancelling HS2 in its entirety to kick start the national renewal?
There's all the media attention for dishonest Brexiteers like Farage of course Starmer isn't going to give them and the Brexit media ammunition. Look at the Farage hysteria at the moment, Like Trump he's a loud mouthed publicity seeker who is given more coverage than he deserves but he makes news and therefore sells newspapers who then benefit from selling more advertising, which is all that matters to them.

Damning but hopeful. I would like Brexit to work out for us though. Closer relations with Europe, outside of Europe.
