Trump's Court Takeover is Pushing the US Towards Orbanism
The right-wing takeover of the US court system mirrors a disturbing trend already seen in Trump ally Viktor Orbán's Hungary, reports Matt Bernardini
Joe Biden ran for President promising to restore “the soul of America.” Many who voted for him believed that his victory brought things back to “normal” and defeated America’s descent into an illiberal state. Yet still, America has watched as the courts have issued landmark rulings rolling back rights for millions of citizens. And all this has happened while Biden has been in office.
This is because despite Trump’s defeat, he and his cronies were able to successfully stack the courts so that his influence will be felt for decades to come. In many cases, unelected judges appointed by Trump will decide policies, instead of politicians who were elected by a majority of the people.
For all the comparisons lately of the Republican party to Hungary, and they no doubt are influenced by Orbán’s regime, the right-wing takeover of the court system bears the biggest resemblance to the illiberal Central European country. After all there’s a reason why Orbán is partying with Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
