A church in Ohio planning to hold a ‘Drag Show Story Hour’ had molotov cocktails hurled at it on the evening of 24 March. No-one was hurt in the attack, though the organizers acknowledged an increasing number of threats, and are raising funds for extra security for the event which, so far, they intend to go ahead with.
When I first began investigating the number of bills targeting the gay community, trans youth, and drag queens, I wanted to believe that it was confined to the bible belt, southern states still aggrieved that they lost the Civil War and the world had progressed beyond the era of white landed gentry.
But what I found is far worse – the war on gay people in America is nationwide, staggering in scope, and rooted in fascist ideology.
