Adrian Goldberg interviews Jana Zikmundova, Belgium’s Ambassador to Ukraine between 2011 and 2014. Jana grew up in Czechoslovakia, and witnessed Russian troops on the streets of Prague in 1968 before her family fled to the West.
She recalls her sense of shock at seeing the return of Russian imperialism to Europe.
Now retired from her diplomatic career, Jana is an activist with Brussels-based NGO Defend Democracy.
She talks passionately about the need for greater recognition by Western leaders of the threat posed by President Putin - while also calling for a pan-European alternative to US-based tech firms.
This episode of the Byline podcast was produced in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg and Harvey White.
