Last Saturday’s horrific attacks by Hamas brought tensions between Israel and Hamas to a level not seen in a long time. The group has killed more than 1,200 Israelis, including hundreds at a music festival near the Gaza border. President Joe Biden called it the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
The attack was barbaric and has rightly been roundly condemned, yet placing it into historical context has felt nearly impossible in the fast-paced media environment we live in. And this context is badly needed. Without it, we are likely to see a powerful retaliation by Israel, aided by the US, which will result in many more needless deaths over the next few weeks.
