There can be no other fashion model who has exerted the cultural influence of Naomi Campbell, nor contributed so profoundly to social change with regard to inclusivity in the fashion industry, a truth borne out by the longevity of her pioneering career. Hence, the V&A retrospective exhibition focussing on her, the first of its kind for a living model, is a significant cultural moment not to be missed.
A deeply saturated midnight blue tunnel-like structure emblazoned in neon with the words ‘Naomi: In Fashion’, the entrance to the new Naomi Campbell retrospective at the V&A is dark and sexy. There is a frisson of excitement on encountering the sign and hearing a buzz of sultry music, the sounds of multiple videos and excited onlookers. It all feels a bit like walking into the right kind of glamorous night club.
