How You Can Help Protect Voter Rights This Thursday
After an often baffling and concerning campaign, the General Election is finally here, Josiah Mortimer and Homar Paez need your help to highlight examples of voters being denied a voice.
Throughout the campaign and with readers’ support, we've run a VoteWatch project to monitor electoral disinformation, dodgy campaigning, and incidents of voter suppression. We’ve had our work cut out…
A lot of those stories have come from Byline Times readers. We’ve picked up on misleading campaign leaflets designed to deceive voters, to disinformation campaigns by malicious bots.Â
Each instance undermines the trust and fairness of our electoral system. And the election isn’t over yet.Â
Crucially, this will be the first General Election since the introduction of new regulations, such as Voter ID requirements. The new Voter ID rules have presented significant hurdles, with an estimated one million voters lacking a valid form of ID. We've also identified that these rules will disproportionately affect disabled voters.
If you’re casting your vote this Thursday, we need your help, to be our eyes and ears on the ground.Â
Can you share your experiences and observations through the Byline Times’ Election Day Survey?Â
In the recent local elections this led to us unearthing dozens of examples of voters being denied a voice. The General Election is going to be on another scale altogether.Â
So, as you make your way to the polls, please let us know if you spot anything that doesn’t look right.Â
Your input isn't just valuable - it's essential at sounding the alarm when things aren’t working. The Conservatives gutted the official election watchdog, so voters are having to step up.  Â
Thanks for the support - and please do share the link with your family and friends.Â
