As Florida is battered by Hurricane Milton, one of the strongest in recorded history, North Carolina is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 200 people in total and caused record flooding across the Tar Heel state. These natural disasters might seem like a rare opportunity for members of the US government to come together and agree to pass common sense legislation that could save lives.

Instead, it has become another weapon in the Republicans’ outrage machine, a tool used to hold people hostage. They are once again breaking the political process of problem-solving and then pretending to be gobsmacked that the problem continues to exist.
